Watersipora subtorquata is a widespread fouling species, found from the South and North Atlantic, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Australia and west Pacific. This species has often been misidentified, under the names W. cucullata, W.subovoidea, and W.edmondsoni.

Original description: Cellepora subtorquata d'Orbigny, 1852. Replacement name for Escharina torquata d'Orbigny 1842.
