Type species: Millepora cellulosa Linnaeus, 1767
Retepora has been used for a large number of reticulate cheilostomes (lace corals), placed in the family Phidoloporidae (once Reteporidae) of Cenozoic age.
Genera of phidoloporids are distinguished using, among other features, the characters of the ovicells. Numerous species, particularly of fossils, have been described from material with no ovicells. These species cannot be assigned to genera reliably until revision is made from new collections. A large number of such species will remain listed as "Reteporella?" species.
